Part 2 · sample question

Some people believe that universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Or just paste an essay you've already written — any question, Task 1 or Task 2.

§ 01 — Why us

Most checkers inflate your score. We don't.

Free AI tools tell you you're a 7 when a real examiner would say 6 — that feels good, then wrecks you on exam day. Band 7 Lab is calibrated and conservative: it gives you your true band and the precise fixes to raise it.

§ 02 — Marking

Scored on the four official criteria

Each is marked separately against the public IELTS band descriptors, with evidence quoted from your own writing.

Task Response

Did you answer every part, with a clear position and developed ideas?

Coherence & Cohesion

Logical flow, clear paragraphs, natural linking — not bolted-on connectors.

Lexical Resource

Range and accuracy — precise, correct vocabulary beats fancy-but-wrong.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Variety of structures with frequent error-free sentences.

§ 03 — Flow

How it works

01
Write or paste your essay

Task 1 or Task 2, on a real exam-style screen. No sign-up needed to try.

02
Get your honest band

A band for each criterion, with the exact sentences behind every score.

03
Apply the edits, re-mark, climb

Make the small fixes it shows you, re-mark, and watch your band rise.

§ 04 — Report

See exactly what you get

A real marked result — honest band, evidence from your own writing, and the precise edit to lift it.

Band 7 Lab — Examiner report
Overall band 6.0
Task Response 6 · addresses the task but the position drifts in the third paragraph.
Coherence 6 · clear paragraphs, but linking is mechanical ("Moreover" used four times).
Lexical 6 · adequate range; a few collocation slips.
Grammar 5 · recurring article and subject–verb errors hold this back.
Upgrade edit (5→6): I am agree that government should provide the free educationI agree that the government should provide free education

§ 05 — Beyond the score

It doesn't just grade you — it remembers you and makes the fixes stick

Most checkers hand you a one-off score and forget you. Band 7 Lab works like a tutor who tracks your progress — built on how people actually learn: spaced repetition, deliberate practice and goal-setting, not just a number.

Spelling Vault

Every word you misspell is saved and drilled back to you with spaced repetition — the proven way to memorise — until it's mastered. The same spelling never costs you a mark twice.

Grammar & error tracker

Your Coach names the mistakes you repeat across essays — articles, agreement, mechanical linking — and shows each one shrinking as you improve. You fix the habit, not one sentence.

Progress tracker

Your band over time, a goal locked to your weakest criterion, and clear proof you're climbing — with the examiner remembering you from one essay to the next.

§ 06 — Questions

Common questions

Is the band accurate?

It's calibrated to the official IELTS public band descriptors and deliberately conservative — it won't inflate your score. It's a practice estimate to guide your prep, not an official result.

Is it free?

Your first essay mark is free, with no sign-up to try. After that you can keep practising on a subscription.

Is this official IELTS?

No. Band 7 Lab is an independent study tool, not affiliated with the British Council, IDP or Cambridge. It helps you practise for the exam.

How is my band worked out?

Four criteria — Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammar — each scored and averaged, the same structure examiners use. Full explanation here.
