Technology Replacing Teachers

The question
With the rapid growth of online learning, some people think that technology will eventually replace teachers in the classroom. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 9 model answer

As digital tools become ever more sophisticated, some commentators predict that machines will one day render human teachers obsolete. While I readily accept that technology will transform education profoundly, I strongly disagree that it can wholly supplant the teacher, whose role extends far beyond the mere transmission of facts.

It is undeniable that technology has revolutionised how knowledge is delivered. Online platforms grant learners instant access to lectures, interactive exercises and personalised feedback, often at negligible cost. Artificial intelligence can now adapt material to a student's individual pace, identifying weaknesses with remarkable precision and tirelessly drilling difficult concepts. In this respect, digital resources are an invaluable supplement that can democratise learning for those previously excluded by geography, disability or finance.

Nevertheless, education is fundamentally a human endeavour. A truly gifted teacher does far more than convey information; they inspire curiosity, model resilience and respond intuitively to a struggling child's frustration or boredom. Such emotional attunement and moral guidance lie utterly beyond the reach of any algorithm, however advanced. Classrooms also nurture collaboration, friendship and lively debate, social dimensions that an isolated screen cannot possibly reproduce. Strip these away, and education degenerates into a sterile exchange of data rather than the genuine cultivation of character.

In conclusion, although technology will increasingly augment teaching and may well automate routine instruction, I am convinced it cannot replace the teacher entirely. The ideal future is not one of machines versus mentors but of the two working harmoniously in concert, with technology handling repetitive tasks while educators provide the empathy, inspiration and considered judgement that remain irreplaceably and distinctively human.
