Band 9 model answer
The growing market for organically grown produce has sparked debate over whether it genuinely outperforms conventionally farmed food or simply commands an unwarranted premium. This essay will examine both positions before arguing that the benefits, though real, are modest relative to the cost.
Advocates of organic farming emphasise two advantages. First, because such produce is cultivated without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, consumers are exposed to fewer chemical residues, which many associate with long-term health gains. Second, organic methods tend to be gentler on ecosystems, conserving soil quality and protecting pollinators. For environmentally conscious shoppers, these factors make the additional expense a worthwhile investment in personal and planetary wellbeing.
Sceptics, however, contend that the price gap is disproportionate to any measurable benefit. Nutritionally, the difference between organic and conventional crops is often negligible, and the chemical traces found in standard produce typically fall well below harmful thresholds. Moreover, organic yields are lower, meaning more land is required to feed the same number of people, which can itself damage the environment. From this perspective, paying double seems an indulgence rather than a necessity.
In my view, while organic food offers genuine ecological value, the health claims are frequently overstated and the cost places it beyond the reach of ordinary households. A more sensible approach would be to reform conventional agriculture so that sustainable practices become standard rather than a luxury. Ultimately, affordable, responsibly produced food benefits society far more than an expensive niche product accessible only to the affluent.
Examiner’s notes
- Task Response: the essay addresses both views in dedicated paragraphs and states a clear, qualified opinion ('modest relative to the cost') that is sustained into the conclusion.
- Cohesion: discourse markers such as 'First', 'Second', 'however' and 'Moreover' signpost arguments without mechanical overuse, and referencing ('such produce', 'these factors') links ideas smoothly.
- Lexical resource: precise collocations like 'synthetic pesticides', 'chemical residues' and 'environmentally conscious shoppers' show topic-specific control expected at Band 9.
