Children Using Social Media

The question
Some people believe that children under the age of sixteen should not be allowed to use social media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 9 model answer

Social media now occupies a central place in young people's lives, prompting calls to bar everyone under sixteen from these platforms. While I acknowledge the genuine dangers involved, I largely disagree with an outright ban, favouring guided access instead.

Those advocating a prohibition raise valid concerns. Adolescent minds are highly impressionable, and constant exposure to idealised images can damage self-esteem and fuel anxiety. Younger users are also more vulnerable to predators, misinformation and addictive design, none of which they are equipped to navigate alone. Such risks understandably alarm parents and educators alike.

Nevertheless, a blanket ban strikes me as both impractical and counterproductive. Determined teenagers readily circumvent age restrictions, so prohibition often drives usage underground where supervision is impossible. More importantly, social media offers undeniable value: it sustains friendships, nurtures creativity and exposes young people to diverse ideas and communities. Denying these benefits wholesale would leave children unprepared for a digital world they must eventually inhabit.

A wiser approach, in my view, lies in supervised and educated use rather than exclusion. Schools should teach critical digital literacy, parents should set sensible boundaries, and platforms should enforce stronger protections for minors. By equipping children to recognise manipulation and protect themselves, society can harness the advantages of these networks while shielding the young from their worst excesses. For these reasons, I disagree that a total ban is the answer.
