Band 9 model answer
Advances in digital technology have made high-quality courses available to anyone with an internet connection, leading some to predict the demise of the physical classroom. While online learning is undoubtedly transformative, I disagree that it will render traditional teaching obsolete.
The appeal of online education is considerable. Learners enjoy unparalleled flexibility, studying at their own pace and revisiting material whenever necessary. Geographical and financial barriers diminish, since a single recorded lecture can reach thousands across the globe at minimal cost. For working adults and those in remote regions, such accessibility represents a genuine revolution in opportunity.
Despite these strengths, the classroom retains advantages that screens struggle to replicate. Face-to-face instruction allows teachers to read confusion in real time, adapt explanations and offer the encouragement that motivates reluctant learners. Equally important is the social dimension: debating with peers, collaborating on tasks and forming friendships cultivate communication skills and discipline that solitary online study rarely fosters. Younger children, in particular, depend on this structured human contact to develop effectively.
In conclusion, while online platforms will continue to expand access and complement conventional methods, they cannot fully reproduce the interaction, accountability and community of the traditional classroom. The most sensible future is therefore a blended one, in which digital tools enhance rather than abolish in-person education. For this reason, I disagree that classrooms will soon become unnecessary.
Examiner’s notes
- Task Response: a clear opinion ('I disagree') is announced early and maintained, with the body weighing online benefits against classroom strengths before reaching a 'blended' conclusion.
- Coherence and Cohesion: contrast and summary signposts 'Despite these strengths', 'Equally important' and 'In conclusion' organise ideas into a coherent, progressive argument.
- Lexical Resource: confident expressions such as 'render traditional teaching obsolete', 'unparalleled flexibility' and 'structured human contact' display lexical sophistication.
