Online Privacy and Data Surveillance

The question
Governments and companies are collecting increasing amounts of personal data from internet users. Do the benefits of this data collection outweigh the drawbacks?

Band 9 model answer

As digital services permeate every corner of everyday life, the harvesting of personal data by both states and corporations has expanded dramatically in recent years. In my view, although such collection delivers some tangible benefits, the threats it poses to personal freedom ultimately and decisively outweigh them.

On the positive side, data gathering undeniably improves the quality, convenience and security of online services. By analysing browsing patterns and purchase histories, companies can tailor recommendations and streamline transactions, sparing users from irrelevant content and tedious repetition. Governments, meanwhile, exploit aggregated information to detect fraud, track disease outbreaks and allocate scarce public resources more efficiently. During a health crisis, for instance, anonymised location data can map infection clusters and inform targeted interventions that genuinely save lives.

Nevertheless, these advantages are eclipsed by the steady erosion of privacy that mass surveillance entails. When every search, message and purchase is permanently logged, individuals lose meaningful control over their own information, which may then be sold, leaked or even weaponised against them. The danger intensifies sharply when authorities monitor citizens indiscriminately, since a society in which people fear being watched tends to grow conformist, anxious and silent. A single data breach, moreover, can expose millions of intimate records, inflicting lasting harm that no marketing benefit could possibly justify.

In conclusion, while the collection of personal data undoubtedly sharpens services and assists governance, the resulting loss of autonomy and the persistent potential for abuse are simply too grave to ignore. I therefore believe the drawbacks decisively outweigh the benefits, and that strict, enforceable regulation must accompany any future expansion of these practices.
