Cyberbullying and Online Safety

The question
Cyberbullying has become a serious problem on social media. Some believe social media companies should be held responsible, while others think the responsibility lies with users and parents. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 9 model answer

The rise of social media has unfortunately given bullies a powerful and anonymous new arena. While some argue that platforms themselves must bear responsibility for cyberbullying, others insist that users and parents are better placed to tackle it. This essay will weigh both positions before offering my view.

Those who blame the companies make a compelling case. Platforms profit immensely from engagement, yet they often design systems that amplify provocative content and permit anonymity, which emboldens abusers. Because firms possess the data and technical tools to detect harassment, critics contend they have both the capacity and the moral obligation to remove harmful posts and suspend offenders swiftly.

Conversely, supporters of personal responsibility argue that no algorithm can supervise every interaction. Parents, they say, must monitor their children's online lives, teach resilience and model respectful behaviour, while users themselves should report abuse and refuse to participate in it. From this perspective, regulation alone cannot replace the vigilance and values cultivated within the home.

In my opinion, responsibility is necessarily shared rather than belonging to a single party. Companies must invest in robust moderation and transparent reporting, since they create the environments in which abuse flourishes. Equally, however, lasting protection depends on educated users and attentive guardians. Only when corporate accountability and personal vigilance reinforce one another can online spaces become genuinely safe.
