Do Modern Conveniences Make Us Lazy

The question
Some people think that modern conveniences such as cars, delivery services and household appliances are making people lazy and unhealthy. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 9 model answer

It is often claimed that the very inventions designed to ease our lives are quietly making us idle and unwell. While I accept that modern conveniences can encourage inactivity, I only partially agree that they are responsible for laziness and poor health.

There is certainly evidence to support this concern. Cars and delivery services have stripped countless small exertions from daily routines, so that people who once walked to shops or climbed stairs now barely move. Labour-saving appliances similarly remove physical effort from the home, and over time such sedentary habits contribute to weight gain and declining fitness. In this respect, the critics raise a legitimate alarm about how comfort can erode our physical vigour.

Nevertheless, I would argue that conveniences themselves are not the true culprit; the responsibility lies with how individuals choose to use them. The hours liberated by a washing machine or a quick commute can be devoted to exercise, study or family rather than squandered on the sofa. Indeed, many people exploit these efficiencies precisely in order to lead richer, more active lives, joining gyms or pursuing demanding hobbies that earlier generations had no time for.

Ultimately, technology is merely a tool whose effect depends on human discipline. To blame appliances for laziness is to ignore the countless people who remain fit and energetic despite enjoying every modern comfort. I therefore conclude that while conveniences can foster unhealthy habits in the unmotivated, they do not inevitably make people lazy. The decisive factor remains personal choice, not the machinery that surrounds us.
