Encouraging Children to Read

The question
Fewer children today read books for pleasure than in the past. What are the reasons for this, and what can parents do to encourage their children to read more?

Band 9 model answer

It is increasingly apparent that reading for enjoyment has declined among the young. This trend stems from several causes, yet there is much that parents can do to rekindle a love of books in their children.

The principal reason is the rise of digital entertainment. Smartphones, video games, and streaming platforms offer instant, effortless stimulation that books, demanding patience and imagination, struggle to rival. A child can scroll through countless short videos in the time it takes to read a single chapter, so the slower pleasures of literature seem dull by comparison. Additionally, the pressure of homework and structured activities leaves many children with little leisure time, and what remains is often claimed by screens rather than pages.

Parents, however, are far from powerless in reversing this decline. The most effective step is to model the behaviour themselves, for children who see their parents reading regularly come to view it as normal and worthwhile. Establishing a daily reading routine, such as a quiet half-hour before bed, can embed the habit gently. Parents might also fill the home with appealing books, visit libraries together, and allow children to choose titles that genuinely interest them, since freedom of choice nurtures enthusiasm. Reading aloud to younger children, complete with expressive voices, can transform stories into eagerly awaited treats.

In conclusion, while digital distractions and crowded schedules largely explain why fewer children read for pleasure, the remedy lies substantially within the home. By reading themselves, creating a print-rich environment, and making books enjoyable rather than obligatory, parents can reawaken a passion for reading that screens have dimmed, equipping their children with a lifelong source of knowledge and delight.
