Band 9 model answer
It is often observed that modern children look up to famous personalities more than to the adults raising them. This shift has identifiable causes, and while it carries certain benefits, I regard it as predominantly negative when celebrities eclipse parental influence.
Several factors explain why public figures now command such admiration. Foremost is the saturation of social media, where children are bombarded daily with glamorous images of musicians, athletes, and online personalities whose lives appear exciting and aspirational. Compared with the ordinary routines of family life, such figures seem thrilling. Furthermore, as many parents work long hours, children spend more time with screens than with relatives, so the values they absorb are increasingly shaped by the entertainment industry rather than the home.
There is, admittedly, a positive dimension to this trend. A celebrity who champions charity, perseverance, or healthy living can inspire millions of young people to adopt worthy goals, and a sporting hero may motivate a child to train with dedication. When public figures behave responsibly, their reach can spread admirable values far beyond what a single family could achieve.
Nevertheless, the dangers outweigh these gains. Many celebrities project unrealistic standards of beauty, wealth, and behaviour, leaving impressionable children dissatisfied or insecure. Worse, when a famous role model acts recklessly, the harm is magnified across a vast audience. Parents, who know their children intimately, are far better placed to instil enduring values than distant figures pursuing fame. For this reason, I believe the erosion of parental influence is a worrying development, and families should actively reassert their guiding role in their children's lives.
Examiner’s notes
- Task Response: the two-part prompt is fully addressed, identifying causes and delivering a clear evaluative verdict ('predominantly negative').
- Coherence and Cohesion: discourse markers ('Foremost', 'admittedly', 'Nevertheless') signpost the causal analysis and the shift to evaluation cleanly.
- Lexical Resource: vivid, precise expressions such as 'saturation of social media', 'aspirational' and 'erosion of parental influence' elevate the register.
