Band 9 model answer
The growing fashion for keeping exotic creatures as household companions reflects both fascination with the wild and the ease of modern trade. While owners derive genuine pleasure from these unusual animals, I am convinced that the disadvantages of the practice decisively outweigh its limited benefits.
It would be unfair to deny that exotic pets offer certain attractions. They provide their keepers with companionship and a distinctive sense of identity, and a minority of responsible owners do learn a great deal about animal biology in the process. In rare cases, private breeding has even contributed to preserving species that are scarce in the wild, supplementing the work of formal conservation efforts.
These modest gains, however, are dwarfed by serious drawbacks. Wild animals have complex needs that domestic settings cannot satisfy, so confinement frequently condemns them to frustration, ill health and premature death. They may also endanger their owners and the public, as powerful predators and venomous reptiles are inherently unpredictable. Perhaps most damagingly, demand for exotic pets fuels a cruel and often illegal trade that strips creatures from their habitats, accelerating the decline of vulnerable populations.
In conclusion, although a handful of owners care diligently for their unusual charges, the overall picture is overwhelmingly negative. The suffering inflicted on the animals, the safety hazards and the encouragement of an exploitative trade far exceed the pleasure a few individuals enjoy. Governments would therefore be wise to restrict ownership tightly, permitting only licensed sanctuaries and reserving wild animals for the wild, where they truly belong.
Examiner’s notes
- Task Response: the 'advantages outweigh disadvantages' question is answered directly with a clear evaluative verdict ('decisively outweigh') sustained throughout.
- Coherence and Cohesion: balanced structure weighs benefits then harms, linked by contrastive signposting ('These modest gains, however, are dwarfed by serious drawbacks').
- Lexical Resource: strong evaluative language such as 'dwarfed', 'exploitative trade' and 'inherently unpredictable' gives the argument clarity and force.
