The Persistence of Social Class

The question
Although many believe modern societies are open and classless, others argue that social class still strongly influences people's lives. To what extent do you agree that social class remains important today?

Band 9 model answer

Modern societies often present themselves as open arenas in which background no longer dictates destiny. Yet despite this comforting image, I strongly agree that social class continues to exert a powerful and often hidden influence over people's lives.

The clearest evidence lies in the way advantages and disadvantages are passed down through families. Wealthier parents transmit not only money but also cultural confidence, useful connections, and an instinctive familiarity with institutions such as universities and professions. Their children therefore navigate these worlds with ease, while those from poorer homes must learn the unwritten rules from scratch, often at great cost. This inheritance operates quietly, but its effects on opportunity are profound.

Class also shapes experience in ways that go beyond income. Accent, manners, and tastes can mark a person as an insider or an outsider, influencing who is hired, trusted, or promoted. Even where overt snobbery has faded, subtle judgements persist, so that someone may possess the right qualifications yet still be quietly excluded from elite circles. Health, lifespan, and access to good housing likewise track class divisions with depressing consistency.

That is not to deny that some mobility exists; talented and fortunate individuals do cross class boundaries, and this should be celebrated. However, such cases remain the exception rather than evidence of a level playing field. In my view, the belief that we live in a classless society is largely a flattering illusion. Class has become less visible and less openly discussed, but it remains a deep structuring force, and pretending otherwise only makes its effects harder to challenge.
