Role of Friendship in Wellbeing

The question
Some people argue that close friendships are one of the most important factors in a person's overall wellbeing. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 9 model answer

In an age preoccupied with career and material success, it is sometimes forgotten how profoundly our happiness depends on the company we keep. I strongly agree that close friendships rank among the most important determinants of a person's overall well-being.

The emotional support that friends provide is, to my mind, irreplaceable. During periods of hardship, a trusted confidant offers comfort, perspective and reassurance that ease the burden of stress and grief. Friends also share in our triumphs, amplifying joy that would feel hollow if celebrated alone. This reciprocal exchange of empathy satisfies a deep human need for connection, without which even the most fortunate individuals can feel desolate.

Beyond emotional comfort, friendship exerts a tangible influence on health and personal growth. Studies repeatedly show that people with strong social bonds live longer and suffer less from anxiety and depression, evidence that companionship is not a mere luxury but a pillar of wellness. Good friends, moreover, challenge our assumptions and encourage us to become better versions of ourselves, fostering a maturity that solitary living rarely cultivates.

While other factors such as health and financial security undeniably matter, I would maintain that they cannot compensate for a life devoid of genuine friendship. A wealthy but friendless person often languishes, whereas those rich in companionship endure adversity with remarkable resilience. For these reasons, I firmly believe that close friendships constitute one of the most vital foundations of human well-being, deserving as much care as we devote to any other priority.
