Band 9 model answer
Who should bear chief responsibility for instilling courtesy and moral values in children is a question that prompts spirited disagreement. Some place this duty firmly with parents, while others look to schools. I contend that the family must lead, with schools playing an important supporting role.
The case for parents resting at the heart of moral education is compelling. From birth, children observe and imitate those closest to them, absorbing attitudes toward honesty, respect, and kindness long before they enter a classroom. Parents shape character through countless everyday interactions, and because they know their child intimately, they can correct lapses and reinforce good conduct consistently. Values modelled at home, day after day, leave a deeper imprint than any formal lesson.
Those who assign this task to schools, however, raise valid points. Teachers spend many hours with children and can promote shared civic values such as tolerance and cooperation across diverse groups. Where parents are absent, neglectful, or themselves poor role models, schools may be the only institution capable of teaching basic decency. A structured curriculum can also articulate principles that busy households overlook, ensuring no child is left without moral guidance.
In my judgement, the two are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, but parents must take the lead. The home establishes a child's moral foundation through example and intimacy, while schools build upon it, broadening values into a social context. When families abdicate this duty and rely solely on teachers, the results are usually disappointing. The most successful upbringing emerges when committed parents and conscientious schools reinforce the same standards in partnership.
