Band 9 model answer

As access to information grows, patients increasingly debate whether to rely on ancient healing traditions or on modern scientific medicine. This essay will consider the appeal of each before arguing that evidence-based medicine should take precedence, with traditional practices playing a supporting role.

Supporters of traditional and alternative remedies value their long history and holistic outlook. Practices such as herbal treatment and acupuncture have been refined over centuries and often treat the patient as a whole person rather than a collection of symptoms. They tend to be gentle, affordable and culturally familiar, which explains why many people find them comforting, particularly for chronic complaints that conventional medicine struggles to cure outright.

Advocates of modern medicine, on the other hand, prize rigorous testing and proven results. Treatments are subjected to controlled trials before approval, so their benefits and risks are measured rather than assumed. Vaccines, antibiotics and surgery have eradicated diseases and extended lifespans in ways that no traditional remedy could achieve, and this reliability is precisely what critics feel alternative therapies lack.

In my view, scientific medicine must remain the foundation of care, because lives depend on treatments that demonstrably work. Nevertheless, traditional approaches need not be dismissed entirely; where they are shown to be safe, they can complement modern treatment and support patient wellbeing. The wisest course is to subject all remedies to honest scrutiny and adopt whatever genuinely helps.
