Self-Driving Cars: Pros and Cons

The question
In the future, self-driving cars may replace vehicles driven by humans. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Band 9 model answer

The prospect of autonomous vehicles taking over our roads, once confined to science fiction, is fast becoming a realistic possibility. Despite legitimate concerns, I believe the advantages of self-driving cars will ultimately outweigh the disadvantages.

The most significant benefit is the potential to save lives. The overwhelming majority of road accidents are caused by human error, whether through speeding, distraction or intoxication. A computer that never tires, never loses concentration and obeys the rules without fail could in principle reduce collisions dramatically, sparing countless families from tragedy. Autonomous cars would also grant mobility to those currently unable to drive, such as the elderly and the disabled, and could ease congestion by communicating with one another to optimise traffic flow.

The drawbacks, however, cannot be dismissed. The technology raises difficult questions of responsibility: if a driverless car causes a fatal crash, it is unclear whether the blame lies with the owner, the manufacturer or the software developer. There is also the threat of malfunction or malicious hacking, either of which could turn a vehicle into a hazard. Furthermore, widespread automation may eliminate the livelihoods of millions of professional drivers.

These problems are serious, yet they appear solvable through robust regulation, rigorous safety testing and support for displaced workers. They are obstacles to manage rather than reasons to reject the technology outright.

In conclusion, although self-driving cars present genuine challenges concerning liability, security and employment, their capacity to prevent accidents and broaden access to transport is transformative. For these reasons, I consider the advantages decisive.
