Band 9 model answer
The way in which people communicate has been transformed by the internet, with emails, messages and video calls increasingly replacing in-person conversation. Although this shift carries certain drawbacks, I believe its advantages are the greater.
The benefits of online communication are considerable. Above all, it dissolves the barrier of distance, enabling friends, families and colleagues to stay in touch instantly regardless of where they are in the world. This connectivity has proved invaluable for international business, allowing teams on different continents to collaborate without the expense and delay of travel. Online communication is also remarkably convenient and efficient: a single message can reach hundreds of people at once, and conversations can be conducted at a time that suits everyone, free from the constraints of geography.
There are, of course, disadvantages. Digital messages strip away the tone of voice, facial expressions and gestures that give face-to-face conversation its richness, which can lead to misunderstandings and a sense of emotional distance. Some people, moreover, hide behind their screens, communicating in ways they never would in person, while the constant flow of notifications can feel intrusive and overwhelming.
On balance, however, these problems seem modest beside the advantages. Misunderstandings can be minimised by using video where nuance matters, and the ability to remain connected across vast distances is a genuinely revolutionary gain that previous generations could only dream of.
In conclusion, while online communication lacks the depth of personal contact and can occasionally be misused, its unmatched convenience and power to connect people worldwide mean that, in my view, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
