Band 9 model answer
Advances in digital technology have made it possible for millions of employees to work from home, a trend that accelerated dramatically in recent years. Although remote working has its drawbacks, I am convinced that its advantages are more substantial.
The benefits operate on several levels. For employees, the elimination of the daily commute saves both time and money and reduces the stress of crowded transport, freeing up hours that can be devoted to family or rest. This flexibility tends to improve work-life balance and, with it, overall wellbeing. Employers profit too, since they can reduce expenditure on office space and recruit talented staff regardless of where they live. Society as a whole gains from fewer cars on the road, which lowers both pollution and congestion.
There are, nevertheless, genuine disadvantages. Working in isolation can be lonely, depriving people of the camaraderie and spontaneous exchange of ideas that an office provides. Some employees struggle to separate professional and personal life when the two share the same space, leading to overwork or, conversely, distraction. Collaboration and the training of junior staff can also prove harder at a distance.
These difficulties are real but largely manageable. Many organisations now adopt a hybrid model, combining home and office work to capture the benefits of both, while video conferencing and messaging tools keep teams connected.
In conclusion, although remote working can foster isolation and blur boundaries, the gains in flexibility, cost and environmental impact are considerable. In my view, therefore, the advantages of this trend clearly outweigh its disadvantages.
Examiner’s notes
- Answers the outweigh question explicitly and organises advantages by stakeholder (employee, employer, society) for clarity.
- Disadvantages are acknowledged and then mitigated (the hybrid model), showing nuanced, realistic judgement.
- Idiomatic collocations strengthen the response: work-life balance, camaraderie, hybrid model, blur boundaries.
