Band 9 model answer
Modern children are growing up surrounded by screens, and the hours they devote to phones and tablets have risen sharply. This essay will consider why this has happened and what families and schools can do to curb the trend.
The reasons are both technological and social. Devices today are extraordinarily engaging, offering games, videos and social apps specifically designed to capture and hold attention. At the same time, many parents, busy or exhausted, find that handing a child a tablet is the simplest way to secure a few quiet moments, effectively using screens as digital babysitters. The decline of safe outdoor spaces in many cities compounds the problem, since children who cannot play freely outside naturally retreat indoors to their devices.
Several measures could reduce excessive use. Most importantly, parents should set clear, consistent limits on screen time and, crucially, model healthy habits themselves, as children imitate the adults around them. Replacing screen time with attractive alternatives, such as sports clubs, family outings and hobbies, gives children a genuine reason to put their devices down. Schools, too, can help by promoting physical activity and educating pupils about the importance of balance. Where possible, local authorities should invest in parks and recreation facilities so that the outdoors becomes an inviting option once more.
In conclusion, children overuse electronic devices because the technology is compelling, parents rely on it for convenience, and outdoor alternatives have dwindled. Through firm boundaries, positive role models and appealing activities, however, this excessive use can be brought under control.

- Develops points with insight (devices as digital babysitters; children imitate adults) rather than listing them superficially.
- Accurate, expressive lexis features throughout: compelling, dwindled, role models, recreation facilities.
