Band 9 model answer
In an age that prizes productivity above almost everything, leisure is frequently dismissed as an indulgence to be earned only after work is done. I strongly agree, however, that rest and recreation are every bit as vital as labour, since they sustain the very capacity to work well.
The most persuasive argument is that rest is not the opposite of productivity but its foundation. The human mind and body cannot perform indefinitely; without adequate recovery, concentration falters, creativity dries up and errors multiply. Numerous studies link chronic overwork to burnout, anxiety and serious physical illness, demonstrating that relentless toil is ultimately self-defeating. A well-rested employee accomplishes more in fewer hours than an exhausted one labouring late into the night.
Leisure, moreover, serves purposes that work alone can never fulfil. Time spent on hobbies, exercise and the company of loved ones nourishes the relationships and interests that give life its meaning. A person defined solely by their occupation leads an impoverished existence, however impressive their professional achievements. Rest restores not merely the body but the sense of self that ceaseless work steadily erodes.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that leisure and rest deserve equal standing with work rather than being treated as a guilty afterthought. Far from being idle time, they replenish our energy, safeguard our health and remind us why we labour in the first place. A society that grasps this truth will be both happier and, paradoxically, more productive than one that worships work alone.
Examiner’s notes
- Task Response: the 'to what extent' prompt is met with strong agreement, supported by two distinct lines of reasoning (productivity and meaning) and a confident conclusion.
- Cohesion: the reframing 'not the opposite of productivity but its foundation' and the closing 'paradoxically' create sophisticated logical turns that bind the argument.
- Lexical resource: precise, evocative wording such as 'an indulgence to be earned', 'relentless toil is self-defeating' and 'impoverished existence' shows Band 9 lexis.
