Remote Work vs Office

The question
Since the pandemic, many employees have continued to work from home permanently, while some companies insist they return to the office. Do the benefits of permanent remote work outweigh the drawbacks?

Band 9 model answer

The mass experiment in home working triggered by the pandemic has hardened into a permanent feature of many careers. Although remote work offers genuine and substantial gains, I believe these are best captured through a hybrid arrangement, since fully remote models carry costs that purely flexible advocates tend to underestimate.

The attractions of working from home are undeniable. Employees reclaim hours otherwise lost to commuting, enjoy greater autonomy over their schedules and can integrate work with caring responsibilities more easily. Firms, in turn, save on expensive office space and can recruit talent regardless of geography, widening their pool of applicants and often improving retention.

Yet permanent isolation from colleagues exacts a price. The spontaneous conversations through which ideas circulate and trust is built rarely survive a video call, and junior staff in particular lose the informal mentoring that accelerates early careers. Over time, a purely remote workforce can fragment into disconnected individuals, weakening the shared culture that holds organisations together and blurring the boundary between work and home life.

For these reasons, I am persuaded that the optimal answer lies between the two extremes. A hybrid pattern, in which staff attend the office for collaboration but work remotely for focused tasks, preserves the flexibility employees value while safeguarding the cohesion employers need. Rather than treating remote and office work as rivals, organisations should blend their strengths, granting the freedom of home working without surrendering the human connection on which lasting teams depend.
