Band 9 model answer
Whether burning ambition is the key to a successful career or an overrated and even destructive trait is a question that divides opinion. Having considered both sides, I believe ambition is helpful but far from indispensable, and that its value depends entirely on how it is channelled.
Those who prize ambition point to its motivating force. A strong desire to advance drives people to acquire new skills, persevere through setbacks and seize opportunities others let pass. Many of the most accomplished figures in any field were propelled by precisely this restless determination, and without some appetite for progress, careers can drift and stagnate.
Critics, however, caution that ambition has a darker face. Pursued obsessively, it can breed ruthlessness, damage relationships and leave people perpetually dissatisfied, forever chasing the next milestone at the expense of health and contentment. They add that countless individuals build rewarding working lives through diligence, reliability and craftsmanship without ever craving promotion, which suggests ambition is hardly a prerequisite for success.
My own position reconciles these insights. Ambition, in measured doses, is undeniably useful, supplying the energy that propels careers forward. Yet success is better defined by competence, integrity and fulfilment than by relentless climbing, and these can flourish without towering aspirations. The healthiest attitude, in my view, is a tempered ambition, one that motivates without consuming, allowing people to grow professionally while preserving the relationships and wellbeing that make any success worth having.
